This 3-error play by the Royals is the saddest MLB play of the year

What happened between the Royals and Mets on Tuesday was a game that vaguely resembled the sport of baseball. The wet noodle fight of MLB took place in New York over the course of nine innings, and gave us a play so mind-numbingly bad it needs to be seen to be believed.

Carson Benge is at the plate with runners on first and second. He taps the ball into the infield, as the Mets are want to do — and it’s here that everything goes wild. Jac Caglianone fails to field the ball, he then rips it to third where it’s wildly off target. The ball is then thrown to home, except it’s off target again and trickles back to first.

The result is three errors on one play, and a Little League home run for Benge — which feels like an insult, because no children should ever be associated with a play this bad. Now, you might think that naturally the Mets won this game after being spotted three runs like this in the first, but you’d be wrong. The Royals went on to score seven runs in the seventh, record 19 hits total, and win the dumbest game of the year.

I don’t know when we’ll ever see a play this bad again.
