An AI-generated map shown at a global health conference is sparking outrage for the egregious oversight.
The U.S. State Department is facing criticism after an AI-generated map of Africa mislabeled every country during a presentation at the AIDS 2026 conference in Rio de Janeiro.
According to Reuters, the map was displayed during a presentation outlining the State Department’s global health agreements. It incorrectly placed several African nations, including moving Nigeria into the Sahara Desert, relocating Mozambique to the Horn of Africa, and placing Côte d’Ivoire on the opposite side of the continent. Reuters also reported that the image contained an OpenAI watermark, indicating it had been created using OpenAI tools.
“This was an unfortunate error caused by a team member who hastily altered the slide deck immediately before the presentation at the AIDS 2026 Conference,” a State Department spokesperson said in a statement shared with PEOPLE. “We take full responsibility for the confusion and misrepresentation it caused for attendees, including our African partners.”
The presentation quickly became a topic of discussion online after screenshots circulated on LinkedIn and other social media platforms. Matt Petit, an AI and geopolitics specialist at the Atlantic Council, criticized the oversight, writing, “Whoever created and approved this slide did not know where countries in Africa are and did not care to check their work.”
The new health funding agreements were designed to strengthen national health systems through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, or PEPFAR. Despite the controversy, the State Department said discussions with international partners remained productive.
Held July 26-31, AIDS 2026 brought together government officials, researchers, advocates and international delegations to address barriers to HIV care and close persistent gaps between prevention efforts and medical treatment. The State Department attended as it worked with partner nations to develop new multi-year Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) aimed at strengthening the long-term capacity of countries receiving U.S. global health assistance. The new MOUs are designed to strengthen recipient countries’ internal health systems over the long term through collaborative planning rather than short-term aid initiatives. Despite the controversy surrounding the presentation, the State Department said discussions at the conference remained “substantive and constructive” and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting PEPFAR.
While generative AI can accelerate content creation and streamline workflows, the incident serves as a reminder that it does not eliminate the need for human expertise and review.
