Pitchork: The show last night was intimate. Is that how you picture them going down in your head?
Luhh Dyl: I guess, but I want to make it an experience with instruments, outfit changes, tuxedos, nice dress shoes.
Sounds like an image out of an old Detroit family photo album.
You know what’s crazy? My family don’t even got a photo album. We been asking about why we don’t got one forever, bro. I got a lot of addicts in my family. Nobody really with their head on straight. So we missed out on regular things like that.
What was the Brightmoor area of Detroit like back then?
There was literally nothing over there. To this day, it’s all broken-down houses, bandos. The house we grew up in is not even there anymore. You feel me? Barely any people. I had really nothing to do but spend time with my brothers and my cousins. My mom would always be at work, so we’d just be walking to the store, playing football, listening to Michael Jackson. I didn’t have too many friends, I was just with whoever was at my granny’s house.
Grandma’s house is always the meet-up point.
That’s why we was sick when that house got burned down. I don’t even remember how it happened.
Did that splinter the family?
Yeah, because that’s when we—my mama and my two brothers—moved to the ’burbs. I had one auntie move to California, another to Alabama. All the division happened. We used to all be close as hell. Not no more, though. And if you get money, people be like turning weird, bro. I don’t be fucking with some of them because of that.
Did you draw or write or—
I used to dance, bro. I used to do Michael Jackson dances. I remember doing that for the school talent show.
What’s your Michael review?
They missed so much shit, it was weird. He was a kid, then all of a sudden he was grown up. I wanted to know everything. How he died. What really happened. They didn’t really get into what made Joe Jackson so fucked up. They didn’t get into the brothers.
You got a point. The brothers feel like the key to being able to get inside of his head. I feel like even in your music I learn a lot about you through little asides about your brothers.
I was really with them every day. I’m the youngest, but we all pretty close in age. One of my brothers used to dance with me, and the other is in the Marines right now. But before that, he used to sing. He was the one that had all of the studio shit. This music shit was really his passion. He sounded like Chris Brown, I’m not gon’ lie. That’s why it’s so crazy where I’m at. There’s a trillion people in the world and somehow I’m a rapper.
