Anne Hathaway paired a hand-painted Michael Kors gown with shimmering Roger Vivier sandals at the 2026 Met Gala red carpet in New York City on Monday.

While the dress had a floor-length, flowing skirt that concealed her shoes in some poses, Hathaway wore the Roger Vivier Viv’ Choc Platform Sandals in a lustrous black satin. The sandals are characterized by a platform embellished with crystals that travel all around front of the shoe. The open-toe sandals feature a covered high heel, that measures around 4.7 inches.
An ankle strap with mini Viv’ Choc buckle holds the foot in place, while a wide strap wraps over the front of the foot creating a peep-toe like effect. The sandals are crafted in silk blend satin with suede detailing, and feature an emblematic heart on the insole.

Hathaway’s gown is a custom dress from the Michael Kors Collection. The design is a black silk-and-wool mikado strapless gown with a cascade skirt, featuring one-of-a-kind hand-painted motifs by artist Peter McGough.
Kors shared on the red carpet that McGough was one of his classmates from school and he called on the artist to hand-paint Anne’s dress with a plunging canvas neckline. The painting on the back of the skirt was inspired by Eirene, the Greek goddess of peace, as well as doves, which also symbolize peace.

“I have to say after many, many Met Galas, I love this exhibit. I’ve always been very inspired by art…I was a fashion person who loved art,” Kors said. “We were very inspired, well because she is the goddess of peace,” the designer said. “We all collaborated together and there’s a [John] Keats ‘Ode on a Grecian Urn’ and [Anne] is my Grecian Urn.”
Hathaway has been a recurring presence at the Met Gala since making her debut in 2009, when she wore a Marc Jacobs bubble dress to the “The Model as Muse” gala. She returned in 2010 in a Valentino ballgown, then continued appearing through much of the 2010s, including a sheer Valentino creation for the 2013 “Punk: Chaos to Couture” theme, a Calvin Klein two-piece in 2014, a hooded gold Ralph Lauren lame gown in 2015, and a billowing Valentino gown in 2018.

After a five-year absence, Hathaway made a return to the Met Gala in 2023 in a Versace gown studded with gold safety pins, an homage to both Gianni Versace and Karl Lagerfeld. She also attended the 2025 event in a custom Carolina Herrera look. The Oscar winner is fresh off a worldwide press tour for “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” which featured a Met Gala-inspired scene. The 2026 Met Gala took place on Monday at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. This year’s exhibition, “Costume Art,” celebrated fashion as an art form, with a dress code of “Fashion Is Art.” The event was cochaired by Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Anna Wintour, with Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchéz-Bezos serving as honorary chairs. The annual benefit raises funds for the Met’s Costume Institute.
