AI Drives Alibaba.com CoCreate Pitch Shift

Alibaba.com’s global CoCreate Pitch competition is spotlighting a massive shift in how new businesses start.

Out of more than 15,000 applications from 132 countries, an astonishing 71 percent came from “solopreneurs.”

That is a big jump from last year’s 40 percent. This rapid rise of one-person businesses is being fueled almost entirely by artificial intelligence. Tools such as Accio Work, Alibaba’s new plug-and-play AI agent, allow single founders to handle heavy-lifting tasks like industrial design, coding and marketing, the company said in a statement Wednesday. AI runs the show, and consequently, it lowers the traditional barriers to entry while birthing a new era of lean, “agentic” business models.

This technological surge is completely cross-generational. Over 80 percent of applicants across Generation Z, millennials and Gen Xers said they are using AI tools as an essential part of their journey.

Interestingly, the motivations and strategies of these founders vary wildly by region. In the U.S., nearly 35 percent of applicants polled said they are launching startups to escape burnout from their day jobs, adopting an “idea-first” approach where they build polished websites and 3D product renderings before even securing a manufacturer.

In the U.K., applicants are heavily dominated by seasoned professionals from healthcare and engineering. Across Germany and France, sustainability takes center stage, with nearly a fifth of all projects focusing strictly on eco-friendly products.

This year, CoCreate Pitch is divided into three tracks: the General SMEs Track, the 0-to-1 Startup Track and the Students Track. The 0-to-1 Startup Track, designed for founders using Accio Work, currently accounts for 65 percent of all applications, reflecting the intense momentum among early-stage creators.

And the entrepreneurs are moving fast. Liz Wang, global head of commercial strategy at Alibaba.com, said the platform even trimmed its application form down to just six fields because its own AI can instantly analyze the logic and potential behind a simple pitch.

This evolution hints at a future dominated by agent-to-agent commerce, where digital bots negotiate directly with factories and logistics providers. The regional finals for the competition will kick off in Los Angeles this September, followed by the European finals in London in November.
