Angelina Jolie appeared to update her “recession blond” with ashy tones for the screening of her upcoming film, “Couture,” in New York City on Tuesday night.

Outside The Whitby Hotel, the 51-year-old actress’ posed in a black viscose silk Tom Ford dress with a plunging sweetheart neckline and draped fabric down to her feet. Jolie’s hair was blown out and brushed over the right side of her head. With dark, dulled roots and a honey blond body, the color composition of her hair resembled that of the viral “recession blond” — a hair trend that burgeoned in the TikTok-beauty stratosphere last summer, detailing the decision many women made to grow out their natural roots in a bid to save money after years of bleach or platinum blond upkeep.

The look is meant to be low maintenance, requiring little, if any, time spent with foils in at the hairdresser. Roots are either grown out naturally or immediately stripped of the stark blond color to speed up the process of going darker. From the back, Jolie’s brunette coloring appeared to dip well past the crown of her head, where tinges of platinum dye moved in skinny sections from the roots.

In the past, Jolie has tapped stylist Massimo Serini to enliven her hair; however, Serini was not in town to construct her aesthetic on Tuesday. Instead, the Hollywood star partnered with Renato Campora, who topped her hair with Parfums de Marly Valaya Hair Perfume. “A modern interpretation of Veronica Lake glamour, this look was designed to complement the elegance of the dress with a deep side part and soft, face-framing waves. Volume was concentrated at the roots to create lift and movement while maintaining a refined, timeless silhouette,” Campora said in an official statement.

While similar in their presentations, recession blond is not “old money blond; it’s the antithesis of. A recession blond is a balayage’d proverbial red flag for the economy and the ways it’s causing people to cut back on luxury expenses. This fits into wider conversations online centered around the universal concept of “recession indicators,” signs the economy is headed into the red. In addition to dips in consumer spending, others include the prevalence of reverse gentrification, an increase in secondhand shopping and rising unemployment rates.
