10 Best Faux Fur Coats of Winter 2025 (and How to Style Them)

Baby, it’s cold outside, meaning we’re all collectively realizing that the decades-old puffers in our closets aren’t going to cut it anymore, while those oh-so-Parisian trench coats just aren’t insulating enough. The simple solution to these woes lies in the common denominator of Selena Gomez’s more-is-more look in “Emilia Perez,” that of Cate Blanchett’s Carol in the eponymous film “Carol,” and Gwyneth Paltrow’s character’s headline-generating, mink-powered ensembles in “The Royal Tenenbaums.” What we’re alluding to here? Fur coats, of course, which have come back to the runways, streets, and front rows with a vengeance, while perhaps signifying the larger return of the 2024 “mob wife” aesthetic: all maximalist jewelry and smokey eyes and oversized, plush coats that may or may not be sourced from a real animal.

But while the female characters of “The Sopranos” might have resorted to outerwear made out of actual foxes, minks, and rabbits, it’s 2025, and the tide is turning when it comes to how people shop for fur coats. Many celebrities, like Natalie Portman and Joaquin Phoenix, have in the recent past opted out of donning real fur on screen. Groups like the Fur Free Alliance, the International Anti-Fur Coalition, and PETA are doubling down on their efforts to discourage fur farms and trapping animals for their skins. And the CFDA has officially announced just this month that, “beginning with [the] September 2026 New York Fashion Week, [it] will no longer permit animal fur in collections on the official NYFW schedule.”

All this is to say: You can (and should) copy the latest fur coat getups of stars like Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez, Cardi B, and Hailey Bieber without any harm done to the little critters that deserve every protection available. After all, the only thing that can make a head-turning coat better is the peace of mind that comes from knowing it’s of the “faux” variety. And in case you’re unsure of what this term actually means, we have some answers. According to WWD’s previous shopping writer Olivia Cigliano, “while most faux fur is made from polyester, which gets an A-plus for insulation but a low grade in sustainability, new developments have been introduced to include plant-based fibers or recycled synthetics” in the world of faux fur coats.

Interested in layering up this winter and channeling Marilyn Monroe while you’re at it? Our editors have scoured the market for the 10 best faux fur coats that won’t get you on PETA’s naughty list this Christmas. Whether you buy and keep them all for yourself (to inevitably pair with knee-high booties for your next night on the town) or use the purchases as an excuse to treat your mom to something that will last a lifetime, know that the below finds are ethical, affordable, and make their wearers feel like a million bucks. You and your fur coat recipient will be happy. As for that friendly neighborhood chinchilla? It will also continue to live freely and joyously.

Those who want nothing more than a sneak peek of the faux fur coat options to come will be happy to know that we’ve included dark brown selections with notched collars for added flair, longline ones that hit at the knee and come with a belt, as well as jackets that only feature a faux fur trim and are subsequently more minimalist interpretations of the trend du jour. Need inspiration on how to style what you end up snagging? We’re coming in hot with that too… and hot is exactly how you’ll look soon with your fur in tow.

(You might never become the all-suffering, devout, and blinged-out wife of a mafia boss, but no one is stopping you from looking like it.)

Steve Madden Kindra Faux Fur Coat

Known for his trend-aligned, accessible footwear styles, Steve Madden is also a heavy hitter in the apparel department — and this faux fur bestseller is a prime example of the designer brand’s prowess. It managed to amp up the coat’s drama via that notched collar, chunky silhouette, and luxurious brown hue. No, it doesn’t have buttons or a zipper, but you’ll find yourself wrapping up in the jacket’s embrace each time you step out of a restaurant or head to a fancy fête. Worn in conjunction with straight-leg jeans and a semi-sheer, long-sleeve top, it will become simply irresistible.

Via Spiga Reefer Faux Fur Longline Coat

Coquettish at its core, Via Spiga’s on-sale Reefer Faux Fur Longline Coat is the kind of thing a First Lady or fictional heroine with a Transatlantic accent might choose for herself. Its prominent lapels can easily be brought up to the neck for extra insulation, and that longline profile also ensures you can stay protected from the elements while wearing a minidress and tights. For bonus points, the coat’s Winter White shade aces the color that Pantone predicted will reign supreme in 2026, so the purchase will signal that you’re trend-aware in more ways than one.

Azalea Wang Adria Faux Fur Coat

Female-owned brand Azalea Wang is a hit at Nordstrom, and you can join the party by grabbing its Adria style: a fur (faux, obviously) coat whose shawl collar, gray-and-black color palette, and long length come together to create something that demands prime real estate in your closet. There are pockets here for good measure and, to extend the fur motif further, we urge you to pair up the selection with a pillbox faux fur hat that will keep your ears warm, too.

Mango Bola Faux Fur Jacket

It-girl-approved label Mango has its own take on the quintessential fur jacket, and it’s this bold, ultra-modern Bola that’s swathed in green. Featuring covert zip closure, a cropped hem, and an ultra-cozy feel, the coat in question will do its best work when in conversation with glossy leather pants, acetate aviators, and a pair of sensible, season-appropriate stiletto boots.

Farm Rio Multicolor Faux Fur Coat

Our editors love a stylish moment powered by Brazilian brand Farm Rio, and, considering its massive popular appeal, we were surprised to find this particular coat still in stock during the peak of winter. It’s unlike any other option in the roundup due to that patchwork design, not to mention an intentionally shaggy look that’s in some ways reminiscent of feathers. You’ll find a lot to love in its pops of blue and, since the coat itself already speaks volumes, we recommend going the restrained route in regards to the other components of your ‘fit: be it a shoulder bag or a pleated maxi skirt.

Vince Camuto Single Breasted Coat With Removable Faux Fur Collar & Cuffs

More “Jackie O” and less “Megan Thee Stallion at the 2025 Met Gala,” this prim-and-proper Vince Camuto offering is unique in that it grants you the opportunity of going completely fur-free: by coming with not only a detachable fur collar but also fur cuffs that can just as easily come off should you desire a getup that’s not as three-dimensional. This detail also makes the coat ideal for transitional-weather dressing at the start of spring, and we’d be remiss not to mention its wool composition and high-quality buttons down the front. “This purchase satisfied my expectations. I have used it in 20-degree weather and it protected me well,” says one happy Nordstrom reviewer. Protective and sophisticated? Now that’s a winning combo.

Cue all the glamour with Staud’s Casimira Crop Faux Fur Jacket. Its jewel neck will allow your pearl strands and diamond pendant necklaces to shine without being covered up by any kind of collar, while the jacket’s shorter-than-average length gives room for some play in the belts department. A shiny, spaghetti-strapped top, metallic slingback heels, and dark trousers will breathe even more life into this editor favorite. The coat is bound to steal the show at any and all events you take it to — mark our words.

Elie Tahari The Bianca Leopard Print Faux Fur Coat

Last but not least is this gem from Elie Tahari, which masters the prevalent animal-print trend of the day while sticking to a traditional color scheme (in this case, there’s absolutely nothing wrong and everything right with tradition). On the chilliest of days, it will be your best friend — amplifying street-style equations with its double-breasted silhouette and instant air of refinement. Team with riding boots, gold jewelry, and a top-handle tote for looking preppy-chic to the max at work, happy-hour drinks, and every engagement in between.
