Yuki Tsunoda’s violent crash in qualifying brings out red flag at Emilia Romagna GP

Qualifying for the Formula 1 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix is still underway at the historic Imola Circuit in Italy.

But before Q1 has even come to an end, one driver’s day is over.

Red Bull driver Yuki Tsunoda’s scary crash on a push lap brought the red flag out, halting the session with more than 12 minutes remaining in Q1. Tsunoda was pushing through the Villeneuve chicane but slid off the racing line and into the barrier, with the impact flipping his RB21 before the car came to a rest right-side up.

You can see a video of the shunt here:

Tsunoda was able to climb out of the RB21 and walk unassisted to the safety car, where he was taken to the medical center for evaluation.

While the session was stopped, multiple drivers checked with their teams to make sure Tsunoda was okay, including Liam Lawson, who reported from the cockpit of his car that he had seen the video and wanted to make sure that Tsunoda was all right.

Qualifying resumed at 4:20 p.m. local time after an extended delay, with 19 drivers still in the fight for pole position at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
