After breaking out in “Beef,’ the award-winning Netflix series, actor and Emmy nominee Young Mazino joins another hot series for its second season: HBO’s “The Last of Us.”
Mazino plays Jesse in the new season, which will premiere on April 13 after a worldwide press tour, which kicked off in Los Angeles on Monday. For the occasion, the actor wore a black Zegna ensemble with an Omega watch and Lagos jewelry courtesy of his stylist, Amanda Lim.
“She’s really dialed into what I feel good in, which is why I tend to prioritize comfort over anything,” Mazino says. “The suit that I was wearing was Zegna, it was three pieces of a turtleneck with a jacket and an overcoat, and it was a very seamless fit. It felt incredible to wear.”
Upcoming stops include Sydney, Paris and London, during which he and Lim have plans for Prada, Sacai and Saint Laurent, to name a few.
“[Lim] is really curated to fit my personal taste, and she’s always encouraging me to be a bit more ambitious,” Mazino says. “I like to kind of melt into the background with dark colors, and I rarely wear any color, but she’s really doing a great job [of pushing me].”
Mazino recalls watching the first season of “The Last of Us” as a fan, without knowing there was a role in Season Two he could audition for.
“I had also watched a cinematic compilation of all the cut scenes of the first game before the first season came out,” he says. “So I was personally invested before I even realized it was a potential job for me.”
The L.A. premiere was the first time he’d seen the cast in roughly a year, and also the first time he’d seen the first episode with such a large-scale audience.
“I always feel a bit nervous when there’s a big screening, but I remember there was a definitive pause right before the episode ended. It was as if everyone was collectively holding their breath,” Mazino says. “And then the episode ends, and then the whole room erupted in tremendous applause. And I don’t know if I was breathing — I think I was blacking out at a certain point.”
