At one point in our lives or another, we’ve made sweetheart deals for cars with friends or family. An adult gifting an old car to a teenager fresh out of their driving test. Maybe, you sold an unwanted car taking up space in your garage to a friend at less than the market price. While there are typically good intentions at the start, someone can easily change their mind.
What’s your worst car gifting story? We want to know when you saw a deal immediately go south fast. Did you know a gifter that suddenly wanted their car back when they realized the resale value suddenly went through the roof? Did a beggar become a chooser when the car they were being given for free just wasn’t up to their standards? Was someone just trying to shove a lemon onto a friend’s driveway to be their problem?
My mind immediately wanders to the annual Lexus December to Remember sales event when I think of car gifting. The promotion popularized slapping a massive red bow atop cars being bought as a gift and tossing a keyfob under the Christmas tree. Even 25 years later the holiday sales event is still going strong. You know it’s become a part of the cultural zeitgeist when it was the subject of a good “Saturday Night Live” sketch.
