The LPGA Tour saw its first major of the year take place over the weekend in the Chevron Championship at The Woodlands in Texas and it finished with quite the bang. Just like The Masters two weeks earlier it went to a playoff, but this one had five players vying for a major title as opposed to two. Five!
Japan’s Mao Saigo was able to outlast the battle with Hyo Joo Kim, Ruoning Yin, Ariya Jutanugarn and Lindy Funcan for her first major championship and first win on the LPGA Tour at large. Given that she missed the cut at the event last year and was a T56 in 2023 this is an incredible turnaround.
Saigo became the first LPGA player to earn her first victory at a major championship since Allisen Corpuz did at the 2023 U.S. Women’s Open at Pebble Beach. She also is the first Japanese player to take home a major title since Ayaka Furue at last season’s Amundi Evian Championship. Notably, a player from Japan has now won every major on tour.
The LPGA Tour remains in action this week with the Black Desert Championship presented by Greater Zion. It is the inaugural year for this event which should make it rather exciting.
