Police are questioning a suspect in last week’s shooting of United Health Group CEO Brian Thompson. On Monday TrueCar date engineer Luigi Mangione was arrested on gun charges at a McDonalds in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after someone recognized the man from images released by the NYPD following the shooting.
Authorities told CNN that they believe the suspect acted alone and had no plans to flee the country. Police say they found a two-page document on Mangione that said things like “These parasites had it coming” and “I do apologize for any strife and trauma, but it had to be done.” While there are no specific threats in the document, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said it’s clear there are anti-corporate feelings expressed in the document. From CNN:
The man arrested in Pennsylvania had a “ghost gun” when he was searched by local police at a McDonald’s, according to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny.
“He was in possession of a ghost gun that had the capability of firing a 9mm round and a suppressor,” he said.
Kenny added that the gun may have been 3D printed and that police will learn more details after ballistics testing.
Mangione’s LinkedIn says he has been a data engineer at TrueCar since November 2020, and that he lives in Honolulu, Hawaii. His other apparent public social media pages don’t seem to have any other car-related posts or follows in them. TrueCar describes itself as “…an automotive pricing and digital retailing website for new and used car buyers.” Last year, the company laid off over 100 workers and lost its CEO after losing millions every quarter, quite a feat in post-COVID car market.
This is breaking news of an ongoing investigation. We will update this post when we know more.
