An 8-20 season is not what you’d expect from UNC basketball. You may be wondering if someone was injured. You may be wondering if this happened during some war everyone wanted to fight in so UNC struggled to field a team. You may be wondering if I got the stat wrong and if I’m one of those pretty-but-dumb people.
And while all noble guesses, none of those are the cause of UNC’s worst season ever. The Tar Heels fared so poorly in the 01-02 season because their leader, their star, their go-to-guy was Jason Capel, a young man with the confidence of a star, but without the skill. So, many games were lost and much beef was served.
Decades later, Capel was still a little salty. So salty, in fact, he saw fit to, on more than one occasion, yell and curse at UNC crowds.
Hey wait a minute, you might be thinking, why was he at UNC games if there was so much beef? Is the pretty-but-dumb Clara Morris at it again?
Thank you for calling me pretty, again, but Capel was not attending games as a fan/former player. He was the opposing assistant coach. Which perhaps makes it all the more inappropriate to curse at fans, but that’s why we call it Beef History, not Appropriate Meat-Like-Substance History.
