A mysterious crash in Malibu, California, over the weekend has police scratching their heads after two of the occupants in the car seemingly survived but then disappeared without a trace.

A Cadillac Escalade with three men inside careened 1,000 feet down a cliff face at 2 a.m. on Sunday in Malibu, California. According to an unnamed survivor of the crash, all three survived with only minor injuries. The trio then attempted to hike their way back to civilization, but only one of the party made it to his destination. One of the men climbed up to the road and hitchhiked back home. After not being able to contact the other two men the following day, he finally reported the crash to police.

A release from police indicates that the man escaped the crash with minor injuries to his arm and some seat belt abrasions. They called his survival “nothing short of miraculous.” I’ve never fallen 1,000 feet off a cliff in an Escalade, but this does seem like an incredible feat. I can only imagine he was shaken up from the experience and it took him a few hours to compose himself and get back to reality:

“When the car left the roadway it was just coming around the curve. Obviously, he didn’t negotiate the curve correctly and it just started to roll off from the right side,” said CHP Officer Ryan Ayala.

Authorities deployed a search and rescue team to the area of the crash in unincorporated Ventura County, though no other survivors were found. The survivor provided names of the other two men, but police have not yet been able to make contact. Police have not released any further information about the Cadillac, aside from the fact that it is licensed out of state and they needed to work with that state’s authorities to determine who owns the vehicle.

Obviously this is a wild set of circumstances, but it’s probably a pretty good sign for Cadillac that the company could build a vehicle stout enough for three people to presumably survive such a crash.

Thanks to reader Justin E. Burns for the tip. Hats off to you.
