We have a headline about the new Popemobile this morning and it all it took was seeing “New po-” to make me think of the classic Canadian rock group The New Pornographers. Does this mean I need Jesus? More than likely, but I need vaguely fuzzy indie rock from the late 90s/early 2000s much much more. Especially if that music involves the goddess Nico Case.
The two first albums from The New Pornographers were the first things I ever bought online and, since I was like, 15, I had to send the band money orders in order to get the discs. I still have them, somewhere. This one is from an album called Mass Romantic which contains nothing but bangers. This song in particular is a favorite of mine. You don’t need a bunch of fancy chord changes to make a real banger of a song with some classic early rock sounds. And the music video is just, so, so Canadian. Flat scrub land scrapped clean by glaciers and construction equipment—that’s Canada baby! At least, the Canada I know and love. Much like The New Pornographers. Enjoy!
