Are you a food delivery driver looking for a new ride or a huge fan of Domino’s Pizza? If you answered “yes” to either of these questions, I’ve got the perfect ride for you: this 2015 Domino’s DXP delivery vehicle, currently for sale on Facebook Marketplace. Just think of the tips you’ll get pulling up in this sick little car.
From the looks of the ad on Facebook, this modified Chevy Spark is in great condition. Its seller says the car has just 23,500 miles on it with a clean body and pictures seem to confirm this. Its warming oven should also be in great condition considering it was only used for “promotional use” at a former Domino’s franchise. It comes with all the Domino’s accessories and logos you could ever ask for. If you want it, all you’ve got to do is take $15,000 out to Bellmore, New York.
Be warned, though: owning this DXP probably won’t be as easy as it seems. Years ago, we reported on non-Domiono’s affiliated YouTuber, Samcrac, who bought a totaled DXP for $525. After rebuilding it, he claimed that people affiliated with the franchise were trying to either give the DXP back to Domino’s or remove all of the pizza franchise’s theming and hardware.
We reached out to Domino’s for comment back in 2018, and here’s what a spokesperson told us:
Here’s what we know: the franchisee to whom the car belonged offered this gentleman $10,000 for it; he countered with a request for $90,000. From there, it became a legal issue and that’s all we can say at this point.
Domino’s contested that Samcrac was making money off of their design and logos, and I mean, maybe, but it’s not like YouTube pays particularly well anyway. We spoke to a lawyer back then about the situation. Here’s what he had to say:
Domino’s has a point and Sam is missing it. “Fair use” is a doctrine that protects someone from a copyright violation claim – not a trademark violation claim. Domino’s is saying that he is violating their trademark by showing the car in its Domino’s livery, with the prominent name and logo of the company on the car – which, coincidentally, looks just like official cars used by Domino’s.
Of course, if reps from Domino’s have told him that the only solution here is to sell them the car, then that’s a bit heavy-handed. The obvious solution here – if trademark violations are being dealt with – is to simply remove the marks from the car. Domino’s can’t claim they own the car – or have rights to it – simply because their name is on it.
From here, it seems like the car (and the subsequent second DXP be bought) have sort of fallen off the face of the Earth. From the looks of it, Samcrac had to give them back to Domino’s. Pity.
Anyway, if you still want to buy this DXP listed on Facebook, perhaps don’t be too loud about it, and whatever you do, do not put it on YouTube. For $15,000 it’s a bit of a gamble, but it’s also a really cool little vehicle. I suppose if you bought it for your business you could remove the Domino’s logos and throw your own on there. Hopefully, the big-wig fat cats at Domino’s will leave you alone in that case.
