These Are The Cars You Plan To Buy This Year

It’s finally 2025, which means it’s time to start eating right, take a month off drinking and really put the work in to look beach-ready by summer. Just kidding, the doctors who say to do those things may be right, but have you ever had a fried chicken thigh? Instead of making changes to improve your life but suck, why not distract yourself with a new car, even if it’s just new to you?

On Tuesday, we asked you what cars you were looking at this year, and I’m proud to say we got a wide variety of answers. Sure, there are some SUVs thrown into the mix, but that’s just the way life goes sometimes. That said, we do need to talk about the fact that none of you said Miata. I swear, if that car gets canceled…

Anyway, let’s take a look at some of the most popular answers:

Chevrolet Tahoe

Our 2 Mazda 6’s are getting smaller as our son is getting bigger. We’re looking to add a Tahoe/Suburban to the fleet to carry family and cargo around.

And before you all come after me for not getting a minivan (which is an objectively superior people hauler), I want something easy to wrench on. Van engine bays are cramped as hell already, and working on a transverse V6 engine is a pain in the ass I would rather never have to experience again.

BMW v Cadillac v Mercedes-Benz

I’ve begun the process of replacing my 2018 S5 Sportback and have narrowed it down to three options (unless I find something great on the CPO market like a 840i xDrive coupe): M440i xdrive Gran Coupe, CT5-V AWD, CLE53 AMG coupe.

No clear leader at the moment. The Cadillac has buttons and magnetic ride. The Mercedes is gorgeous and a bit smaller than the Cadillac, but with heavy ass doors and capacitive touch buttons on the steering wheel. And the BMW is the “safe” pick but with the annoying touchscreen stuff that seems worse than even the Mercedes, requiring the touchscreen to even turn on the heated seats.

Porsche Boxster

My son is graduating college in May, and I’m going to give him the E30. He loves it, and I’m ready to try something new. Never owned a Porsch-uh, convertible or midengined (other than a brief fiasco with trying to use a Fiero for RallyCross), so thinking that a used Boxster would be a good new experience.

Volkswagen GTI

‘Congratulations, you just won the billion dollar lottery. What do you think your first purchase will be, what kind of new car are you going to buy? A Lamborghini, Pagani or maybe even a Bugatti?!’

‘Nah, a VW GTI 7.5.’

Certainly not new, but simply because I just can’t quite seem to shake the want…

Toyota Highlander

TL:DR version

Highlander

Logic behind this.

1. My wife won’t look at anything but Toyotas.

2. We really need a minivan, not a SUV.

3. The Sienna is horribly ugly. Hit every branch of the ugly tree and then was beaten to submission by drunken monkeys using the ugly sticks it knocked out of the tree.

4.My wife likes shoulder room. The Rav4 and Highlander have it, the smaller Lexus SUVs don’t. Bigger Lexuses are outside of my dream on budget.

5. The Rav4 is ok. Just OK, nothing special. If we are spending new car money, we don’t want just OK.

6. My wife likes the looks of the body on frame SUVs like the 4Runner and Land Cruiser, but we don’t need that much off-road capacity. More importantly, I don’t like climbing into a vehicles with my dodgy knees and bolted together back.

7. I would love to go with a car. My regular driver is a Camry, but this is old and pre-side curtain airbags. Newer cars with side curtain airbags tend to bonk my head on the way in and we all know that I’ve had enough head injuries already.

So, the only vehicle standing is the Highlander. I’m not thrilled with this logic, but it’s reality.

Ford Mustang Mach-E

I have my eye on a Ford Mach-E. Possibly the Rally version.

I’m sold on an EV as a DD… it’s immensely convenient, and more fun to drive than people give them credit for. But I have aging parents that can’t get into my current car (and the CEO went full Bond villain instead of a wannabe) so I’m looking at options with wider door openings, and a little higher off the ground. Plus, the Mach-E Rally is pretty bonkers.

I’m also considering the Volvo EX30, but it’s not nearly as cheap as it was supposed to be. The Ioniq 5 N seems neat, but I refuse to buy anything from Hyundai/Kia.

Cadillac Escalade

I am getting handed down my wifes 2011 Escalade. We are picking up her “new” 2019 Camry that gets almost triple the gas mileage than the Cadillac. She started a new job and her commute has increased.

Probably going to lower it and get some new wheels for it. Then save up some money to get the AFM delete before it drops a lifter.

Hyundai v Tesla

My dark blue 2018 Model 3 LR-AWD is 6 years old so I’ll probably keep it another 6 at least. But if I did get into the situation where I needed a new daily driver, Hyundai Ioniq 5N in light blue, or the refresh 2024 Model 3 Performance in red.

Mazda Bongo Friendee

I’m looking at going retro and trading my 2016 Mazda CX-5 for a JDM van. Probably a,Bongo Friendee but maybe a HiAce

Volkswagen vs. Audi

I’m looking to replace my 2012 VW Passat SE 2.5l with 277k miles with something that has fewer miles… I’m looking for a 2010 – 2017 VW Touareg or equavalent Audi Q7, preferable with one of the diesel engines.

Audi TT RS

I’ve had my 2016 Audi TTS for 5 years now. Next summer I’ll start shopping for a 2-3 year old TTRS. I test drove one last fall just to confirm that the extra cylinder and 100 hp make a big difference.

The Depreciation Champ

Whichever EV SUV ends up depreciating the fastest on the used market. My wife and I had planned on replacing her car with the ID Buzz when it came out, but the specs are so disappointing we are going to look elsewhere. The ZDX is neat, maybe those will drop like a rock and we can get one for a deal in not too much time.
