The Dodge Challenger Demon 170 is a ridiculous car that packs more than 1,000 horsepower, an eye-watering price tag and a zero-to-60 time that puts most hypercars to shame. That also makes it even more embarrassing to learn that the ultimate Dodge Challenger can be bested on the drag strip by a rickety old Mustang.
In a video shared by the Wheels YouTube channel, a Demon 170 lines up on the drag strip against a vintage Fox Body Mustang, and I’m sure you’ve figured out who the winner is by now. The race, which was brought to our attention by the folks over at Autoevolution, took place over at Mission Raceway Park in British Columbia, Canada. The run, which is over in a flash, starts with the standard burnouts on the start line from both cars.
It’s at this point that a few upgrades on the Mustang become apparent, namely massive tires on the rear axle and an updated exhaust system. Clearly, this is what you’d call a sleeper ‘Stang rather than a standard pony that just left the Ford factory. As such, when the two cars launch off the line, the aging Mustang is gone. Within a blink of an eye, it’s out in front of the Demon, and the lead just keeps growing. The Mustang covers the quarter mile in 9.78 seconds while the Demon takes more than 10 seconds.
In a second race against more vintage muscle, the Demon comes out on top and again finishes its run in about 10 seconds. But those repeat performances do raise questions about the driver’s ability, as a car with this much power should theoretically be quicker. I guess if you have a six-figure muscle car then you might not want to thrash it too hard, but isn’t that the point of dream builds like this?
