Right now, we’re smack between Toby’s and Anton’s birthdays. So, we’ve been spending a lot of time discussing birthday cake ideas. Our family’s hot take: All cake is good cake, but the decorations are what take things to the next level, don’t you think? On that note, here are three ways to spruce up a cake — animals, flowers, and squiggles — and please add more ideas in the comments!
ANIMALS
You can top a simple cake with dinosaur toys. This one is by Molly Yeh.
Or add animals with party hats or balloons, like Abby Clawson Low.
FLOWERS
Little chamomile flowers are a lovely way to make a cake feel festive, by Julia Youman…
Here’s our beloved Somsack!
A tall flower makes a fun statement, by Lucie Franc de Ferriere…
…or go with a small bouquet, also by Lucie Franc de Ferriere.
The flowers can be greens, too, by Natasha Pickowicz.
SQUIGGLES
How about squiggles? This gorgeous creation comes from food blogger Tim Mazurek in Chicago.
He added googly eyes for a seven-year-old pal…
…and another time, went with bows.
These squiggles topped with colorful sprinkles look amazing and doable, by Bronwen Wyatt.
Finally, just for fun, remember this tater tots cake…
…and this pasta cake???
Thoughts? What cakes do you love? What decorations catch your eye?
P.S. How to win at birthdays, and a very chocolate-y birthday party.
