The North Face is celebrating the 40th anniversary of its Mountain Jacket with an updated collection and a new face.
The jacket, which made its debut in 1985 and has become one of the company’s signature pieces, was designed by Ingrid Harshbarger to protect climbers and skiers from harsh weather conditions. Over the years, the design has evolved to incorporate new technology such as harness-friendly pockets in fabrics including Gore-Tex and Futurelight.
The 2025 version will include two options: one in Gore-Tex that is waterproof with pit zips and alpine pockets will retail for $450, and another in DryVent Mono, a recycled fabric that is waterproof and seam-sealed, for $250. Both have a center front placket, adjustable hem, cuffs and ladder lock hood adjustment and zip-in compatibility with The North Face’s Retro Denali Jacket.
In the 1990s, the jacket became popular with the streetwear community and counted LL Cool J, A$AP Rocky and Nas among its fans. Throughout the 2010s, The North Face collaborated with a number of different brands and creators on the jacket including Supreme, MM6 Maison Margiela, and the artist Kaws.
As part of the anniversary, the company is launching a campaign for the Mountain Jacket fronted by Griff, a British pop star whose debut album “Vertigo” garnered critical acclaim in 2024. Her creative songwriting about self-discovery and personal evolution falls in line with The North Face’s commitment to highlight emerging talent, the company said.
“Just like music, it’s just as important to me to express myself through fashion and the clothes I wear,” she said. “Having the opportunity to work with an iconic brand like The North Face and being a part of the global campaign for the 40th anniversary of the Mountain Jacket has been amazing.”
