When the Detroit Lions beat the Chicago Bears last season, Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson embarrassed the Bears with a trick play he called “Stumble Bum” that saw QB Jared Goff fake falling down before throwing a touchdown pass. The Bears wanted some of that magic for themselves, so they hired Johnson as head coach over the offseason.
As the Lions were running away from the victory, they poured salt on the wound by recreating the “Stumble Bum” after the defense forced a takeaway. Detroit didn’t need any trick plays to kick Chicago’s ass this year, but they still had fun celebrating at their former coordinator’s expense. Watch the Lions defense pull off their own “Stumble Bum” here:
The Lions boat-raced the Bears in the second half. After the celebration, Detroit went for it on 4th-and-goal while already up big and scored another touchdown. Johnson downplayed Dan Campbell running up the score, but it sure feels like the Lions wanted to remind the Bears that they are still the little brother of the NFC North.
The Bears had optimism this season with Johnson coming in to direct Caleb Williams’ career. Williams struggled in Week 1, and while the offense was okay in Week, the Bears still got humiliated.
Johnson is being sucked into the Bears vortex of suck, and his former team isn’t letting him forget it.
