Tesla Buffing ‘Foundation Series’ Badges Off Cybertrucks To Sell At A Discount: Report

Tesla Cybertruck sales have hit a bit of a wall since it ran through its entire reservation backlog in a little over a year. Now, in an effort to lower its overall price, the automaker is turning some limited edition Foundation Series trucks into regular Cybertrucks, according to a report from Electrek. Originally, Foundation Series trucks were meant for reservation holders only, as they were the first ones produced They all had a $20,000 price bump and a bundle of features and accessories as well as laser-etched badging. Well, it seems like not enough reservation holders actually wanted the $120,000 truck.

Now, Tesla is de-Foundationing some of these trucks to sell them as regular Cybertrucks, according to Electrek. It’s not clear if Tesla will be getting rid of the extra features and accessories these trucks originally received. Still, it will buff out the laser-etched badging on the Cybertruck’s stainless steel bodywork and remove it from the interior. To do this, Tesla will reportedly send the trucks to service and collision centers around the U.S. Once they’re done, they’ll be sold at a $20,000 discount.

Since things are so rocky for the Cybertruck, the Austin, Texas-based automaker is also planning to modify over 800 Cybertrucks to homologate them for the Canadian market, according to Electrek’s report. Apparently, Tesla thinks it has a better chance of selling them to Canadians rather than Americans as demand here has pretty much dried up.

What a disaster. It’s really wild that Tesla was able to blow through over a million reservations in about a year with only 40,000-50,000 deliveries. I cannot wait to see where Cybertruck sales numbers land in a year or two. I know it won’t be good. Well, maybe they’ll improve once the cheaper Cybertruck gets out the door, but who knows when that’ll actually happen?

I’m sorry, this is all too hilarious. What sort of serious car company would do something like this – or put itself in this position? At least CEO Elon Musk has his eye on the ball right now. It’s not like he’s attempting to run the federal government or anything.
