Tennis Continues Its Tunnel Walk at Miami Open

The Association of Tennis Professionals was at it again — showcasing some of the more fashionable players in its ranks.

In the runup to its latest tournament, the Miami Open — which kicked off on March 18 and will run through March 29 — several of the players embraced the “tunnel walk” the organization had introduced in Indian Wells, Calif., earlier this month.

The ATP, the global governing body of men’s professional tennis, calls its walk the Athlete Arrivals and six players participated this time.

Some were styled by former GQ fashion director Mobolaji Dawodu, and others were styled by the players’ own sponsored brands. While a couple of the guys took to the tunnel for a second time, this edition also featured some new names.

Participating athletes this time were: Zizou Bergs, Gabriel Diallo, Frances Tiafoe, Taylor Fritz, Flavio Cobolli and Yunchaokete Bu who wore everything from Hermès and Brunello Cucinelli to Boss and Golden Goose.

The ATP plans to continue with its Athlete Arrivals at Mutua Madrid Open in late April.

Athlete arrivals have become popular social media moments for players and their leagues. The National Basketball Association is perhaps the most famous, but the National Football League and Major League Baseball have also embraced the opportunity to position their players as fashion plates. And the National Hockey League is beginning to test the waters as well. Starting with this season, the league eliminated its suit-and-tie dress code for players, allowing them to wear outfits of their own choosing so long as they were “appropriate” and “consistent with contemporary fashion norms.”
