Thong sandals in the fall may sound … chilly. But according to Tate McRae, the shoes needn’t be tucked away in the back of your closet this season. On Friday night, the Calgary native, who is no stranger to cold weather, made the silhouette autumn-approved with some creative layering.
The pop star was seen with model Cameron Fedora, making stops at hotspots like The Corner Store and Chez Margaux in Manhattan, where she took to the streets in a minimalist pair of patent leather thong sandals. Delicate, sculptural straps framed McRae’s foot, while a slim stiletto heel gave her a lift. Her rich burgundy pedicure amped up the outfit’s autumnal feel.

A hit in the 1990s and early aughts, thong sandals have returned with gusto as of late. The silhouette first picked up speed on the spring 2024 runways, seen at shows like Jacquemus, Miu Miu and Chanel. Ever since, nearly every label — designer and contemporary — has offered their spin on the look.
Last night, McRae balanced the footwear with a cozy layered look, fitting for the brisk New York City forecast. The “Tit For Tat” singer played with texture on top, teaming a tan suede Saint Laurent bomber jacket with a navy knit cardigan. She opted for dark wash straight-leg jeans, a popular silhouette this fall.

The 22-year-old’s accessories read very Y2K. McRae carried a blue Chloé Paddington bag, which launched in 2005 and has made an impressive comeback this year amongst the celebrity set, with other loyal fans including Dua Lipa, Sabrina Carpenter and Kendall Jenner. Her Chanel shield-style sunglasses, meanwhile, had quite the heyday in the early 2000s, too. McRae styled her long caramel blond hair in loose waves and opted for a glowy makeup look.
