Stone Island’s Heritage Spotlighted at Holt Renfrew

CENTER STAGE: Italian luxury brand Stone Island and its achievements in material innovation are being spotlighted at Holt Renfrew Ogilvy in Montreal.

“Material Research ‘984 – ‘024,” an archival exhibition showcasing rare, influential and iconic pieces from the Stone Island archive will be staged inside the recently refurbished Tudor Hall event space at Holt Renfrew Ogilvy in Montreal from Oct. 17 to Oct. 27.

Stone Island has selected five items from Holt Renfrew’s fall 2024 and has paired them with the archival items that directly inspired their design. The exhibit celebrates more than four decades of Stone Island’s material innovation. Stone Island launched in 1982 but since there are not items on display from 1982, the exhibit’s title reflects the oldest piece in the exhibit, which is from 1984. Iconic materials from Stone Island, including metallic, thermo-sensitive “ice” and reflective fabrics, will be displayed.

Stone Island has been a part of the Holt Renfrew family for nearly a decade now, said Carolyn Wright, senior vice president of product at Holt Renfrew. The upcoming exhibit, Wright said, “is a special moment for both of our brands.”

Stone Island, best known for men’s clothing, particularly outerwear, and unique fabrics and dyeing techniques, was founded by Massimo Osti.

“The brand’s designs often have a military or workwear aesthetic, blending functionality with style,” according to a statement from Holt. “One of its signature features is the compass patch logo, typically worn on the sleeve of jackets. Stone Island’s products, especially its jackets, are highly regarded for their technical aspects, such as water resistance, durability and weatherproofing.”
