Steelers news: Aaron Rodgers Pittsburgh rumors swirl after throwing session with star WR

Our long national nightmare may be close to ending.

According to reports Aaron Rodgers had a throwing session with new Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf recently in California, as the veteran quarterback nears a decision on where he will play in 2025.

“It is a process for Aaron Rodgers,” said Mike Garafolo on the NFL Network Monday morning from the NFL Annual League Meeting in Florida. “My understanding is the latest step in the process was over the weekend, at UCLA, he threw to DK Metcalf. They did have a throwing session, the two of them together according to sources informed of that workout.”

With both of their 2024 starting quarterback finding new homes in the Big Apple this offseason — Justin Fields to the New York Jets and Russell Wilson to the New York Giants — the Steelers have a need at the position. Speaking with the media in Florida Mike Tomlin stated that the team was doing their “due diligence” at the position.

“We’re still evaluating the acquisition of a guy at the position, whether it’s free agency and/or the draft, and so we’re doing our due diligence communicating with some free agents. Also preparing for the draft,” said Tomlin.

“We’re optimistic about the room that we’re constructing. Obviously, we’re excited about having Mason Rudolph back.

“But certainly we’re going to continue to explore all our options in terms of rounding that room out.”

Tomlin did address Rodgers’ visit to Pittsburgh, but declined to put a deadline on any decision.

“It’s been reported that he spent a day with us, and it was a really good day,” Tomlin said. “Specifically, he and I obviously have known of each other for some time, and so it was really good to spend some time together, man, and get to know each other more intimately, but it is free agency. It is a process. I have nothing of any more significance to add other than that.”

“Not to my knowledge,” he said when asked if the Steelers have a deadline in mind. “I don’t know that we’ve approached it from a deadline perspective. Certainly, as I mentioned, you’d like to have settled circumstances, but deadlines don’t often bring that to a head.”

Ultimately, Tomlin just wanted to spend time with Rodgers and get an idea of what the veteran quarterback is looking for as he contemplates his football future.

“I really wanted to spend more of our time just getting to know him better and things that he values as a player and a man, and what he might be looking for with his next stop,” Tomlin said.

We’ll see if this throwing session with Metcalf answers any lingering questions Rodgers has on his mind.
