There are various types of basketball — gritty basketball, jaw-dropping basketball, fundamental basketball, the list goes on. There is also pretty basketball, and Skylar Diggins is a master at that specific brand. It’s the way her shot arcs so perfectly in the air before it crashes into the net, or the way she makes her floater look so effortless. Diggins also has grit, of course. She’s known to wag her finger in hopes of getting her plays reviewed when she gets called for fouls, for one.
But everything Diggins does well just looks good on the court. She’s played for various WNBA teams — starting in Tulsa when the Shock were still around and transitioning with them when they moved to Dallas. Then she went over to Phoenix and played a few seasons with Diana Taurasi. Now, she’s in Seattle playing for the Storm, and has unlocked her best brand of basketball.
People questioned what this version of the Seattle Storm would look like. Would Diggins, Nneka Ogwumike, and Gabby Williams have what it takes to lead a team to greatness? The Storm have clicked on so many levels in 2025, and have proved they can beat some of the best teams in the WNBA. While it took outsiders a little bit of time to fully understand this, this Seattle team (and Diggins herself) have known it all along.
One thing that stands out about Diggins is her unwavering confidence in herself, which she constantly backs up with her performance. It takes so much hard work, dedication, sacrifice, and talent to make it into the WNBA. To be a top player, to be a seven-time WNBA All-Star. Of course she should have confidence, she’s one of the best people in the world at what she does.
It’s that sense of pride for her game, love of the game, and passion she so clearly plays with that makes it so entertaining to watch Diggins on the court. She is never not giving 150% out there. She rides incredibly hard for her teammates; she knows her role on this Storm team. She can step up in big moments, but her talents give her the ability to feed others as well.
This season, Diggins is averaging 17.9 points per game, dishing out 5.8 assists per contest, and shooting 40% from distance. Her 2.7 Win Shares has her in the 94th percentile league-wide, showing her importance to her team with the amount of wins she is estimated to have added for them. She also leads her team in both points and assists.
The Seattle Storm are currently 13-9 this season, hovering around 5th place in the league. They seem to be in the running for home court advantage for the playoffs, and are definitely the best squad this franchise has seen since the days of Sue Bird. They have a chance to rise even higher in the standings as they are close in record to Atlanta, New York, and Phoenix. They are also sending three players to the WNBA All-Star Game: Diggins, Nneka Ogwumike and Gabby Williams.
And whether she is hitting a rainbow-like shot, or flashing the “go-to-sleep” gesture after hitting an ice-cold dagger, Diggins is an eye-catching WNBA player. Her pure skills mixed with the fact that she is always going to be entertaining you — no matter if the clock is ticking or not — is why she is such a beloved figure in the league.
