‘Sinners’ Tops Easter Weekend Box Office Bringing In .6M

Sinners brought in the most money in the opening weekend for an original movie since Jordan Peele’s ‘Us’ in 2019

The Michael B. Jordan/Ryan Coogler collaboration has proven successful again with their latest box office opening weekend for Sinners, dethroning A Minecraft Movie, which had held the crown for the last two weekends.

According to Variety, the period vampire movie topped the box office nationwide by bringing in $45.6 million over the Easter weekend. Sinners brought in the most money in the opening weekend for an original movie since Jordan Peele’s Us, which took the weekend top honors with a $71 million take in 2019. The movie, which stars Jordan in a dual role as twin brothers, was directed by Coogler, with whom Jordan has collaborated since 2013, when they worked together on Fruitvale Station.

The two have collaborated on seven movies together, including all three Rocky spinoff films, Creed, Creed II, and Creed III, as well as the Marvel movies Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Industry insiders did not anticipate their latest project together to come out on top, expecting A Minecraft Movie to continue its dominance for a third straight week. Although the Jack Black/Jason Momoa adaptation of the video game pulled in $41.3 million, it fell short because of Sinners strong debut amid great reviews from critics. Sinners played in 3,308 theaters nationwide.

The movie was released in theaters nationwide on April 18. The movie is a supernatural horror film set in the South in the 1930s. The “brothers” are returning to their hometown, “trying to leave their troubled lives behind,“ only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.

Although the film is labeled as a horror movie, Coogler stated that it is more than just a thriller. It’s genre-fluid and serves as a love letter to his love for cinema.

“The film is very genre-fluid,” Coogler said. “It switches in and out of a lot of different genres. Yes, vampires are an element, but it’s not the only supernatural element in the movie. The film is about more than just that.”
