Selena Gomez Wears 1981 ‘Vampire’ Mugler Dress on ‘Jimmy Fallon’

Selena Gomez embraced theatrical inspiration to promote her new album, “I Said I Love You First,” with fiancé Benny Blanco on Thursday’s episode of “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” Styled by Erin Walsh, the singer wore the “Vampire” dress from Thierry Mugler‘s 1981 collection.

The black velvet dress featured dramatic puff sleeves, a sculpted bustier bodice, a plunging neckline and a hi-low peplum silhouette.

In the early 1980s, Mugler became known for creating extravagant designs that transformed the female body. His “Vampire” dress was later part of the “Thierry Mugler: Couturissime” exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum from 2022 to 2023 and was also worn by celebrities including Claudia Schiffer, Natalie Portman, Dua Lipa and Sydney Sweeney.

On Jimmy Fallon’s show, Gomez was accompanied by Blanco, who wore a lavender short-sleeve button-up shirt with purple floral patterns over a white shirt. He completed his look with distressed light blue jeans with decorative elements and black shoes.

Gomez and Blanco released their first collaborative album, “I Said I Love You First,” on Friday. The couple got engaged in December 2024, after Blanco proposed to her during a romantic Taco Bell picnic with a ring estimated at roughly $200,000, according to the diamond experts from United Kingdom retailer Steven Stone.

During the interview with Fallon, Blanco recalled the experience of keeping the marquise-shaped diamond ring hidden from Gomez. “It was in a box, and I had it hidden in a bag that I thought no one would go in. It was the scariest week of my life,” he said.

The couple also shared details from their engagement day. “We had to do a lot of promo for the album,” Gomez said. “So I woke up, and I was very confused on what was happening, on where we were going, because it seemed kind of far. So, I’m kind of a little grumpy. I’m, like, tired… I said, ‘After this shoot, I’m going to go hang out with my friends.’ And he starts, I guess, going, ‘Okay, sure. We’ll see when you get here.’”

“She almost didn’t even come,” Blanco said. “She was like, ‘I really don’t feel that well. I think I’m just going to stay home today. Can’t we just make up the shoot another day?’ And I was like, ‘Uhh…’ I’m trying to figure out a way to do…”

The musical producer said getting engaged to someone “is the craziest thing in the world.”

“It’s like, right before you’re going to tell someone you’re going to be married to them forever. They’re like, ‘Show me how good you can lie to me.’ It’s the hardest… She was just upset with me because the day before, I was making bad lies,” he said.
