Last year, Macy’s unveiled its Bold New Chapter initiative with the goal of challenging the status quo. Balancing the art and science of retail, the strategy was informed by comprehensive customer research, and had three distinct tiers: strengthen the Macy’s nameplate, accelerate luxury growth and simplify and modernize end-to-end operations.
In this podcast, Lauren Parker, director of Fairchild Studio, chats with Nata Dvir, chief merchandising officer at Macy’s, about her 19-year career trajectory from executive trainee to C-suite, and how she is leading the retailer’s merchandising strategy.

“One of the things that has changed so much in my almost 20 years is how quickly trends are now making their way across the country. In the beginning, maybe the coasts, New York or L.A., got the trends first. Now everything’s instantaneous,” Dvir said. “The trend curve still exists, but it’s so much faster. It’s flatter and the reach and scale are so different. That is such a big, important part of how the merchants have to think about it too. It’s not like, ‘Oh, we saw it do a little bit of business this year, and next year we’re going to capitalize on it.’ You’ve got to capitalize on it in the moment.”
