An Erebus Motorsport crew member claimed he was assaulted after celebrating a win at the Bathurst 1000, Australia’s most famous race, unfortunately CCTV footage tells a more embarrassing story. The public likely became aware of the attack after the team’s winning drivers, Brodie Kostecki and Todd Hazelwood, appeared on a national morning TV show, talked about the incident and sent well-wishes to their colleague. Erebus also offered a reward for information leading to the culprits.

The footage aired by Seven News Central West shows the 20-year-old data engineer walking down William Street in Bathurst with a woman trailing behind him, presumed to be his partner. The team’s after-party was held at the Oxford Hotel on the same street. The engineer can be seen punching himself in the face before falling face-first onto the sidewalk. He climbed back up to his feet and stumbled out of frame. The engineer and his partner later ended up in a hospital and stated that they were attacked by three drunk race fans, Nine reported.

The police are confident that no attack took place and will continue to investigate the incident. Erebus’ Bathurst 1000 victory was supposed to be a return to form for the Australian Supercars team after a rocky start to the year. Kostecki, the defending champion, seemingly split with the team after falling out with Erebus management. He returned to the team after missing the opening two rounds of the 2024 season. Before the split, it appeared that Kostecki would follow fellow champions Scott McLaughlin and Shane van Gisbergen to compete in the United States.
