Quentin Johnston start or sit: Week 1 fantasy football advice vs. Chiefs

Week 1 of the 2025 NFL season is finally here and opening weekend will continue on Friday with the Los Angeles Chargers meeting the Kansas City Chiefs in Brazil at 8 p.m. ET on YouTube.

The Chargers are entering the second year of Jim Harbaugh’s tenure and are hoping to take a step forward this season after falling to the Texans in last year’s AFC Wild Card round. Wide receiver Quentin Johnston is one of the offensive playmakers from last year’s team returning to the fold in 2025 and according to FantasyPros, he enters the season with an ADP (average draft position) below 60 in all formats. That means that in most fantasy leagues, he was either a late-round flyer pick or he went undrafted.

Below, we’ll go over Johnston’s outlook in fantasy football for Week 1.

Fantasy Football analysis: Chargers WR Quentin Johnston

Johnston was able to step up his production in 2024 over a disappointing rookie campaign the year prior, hauling in 55 targets for 711 yards and eight touchdowns. Finishing as a top-40 fantasy receiver, he was a true boom-or-bust fantasy option as his value was directly tied to whether or not he found the end zone in a particular game. Having already been surpassed by Ladd McConkey in the pecking order, a returning Keenan Allen threatens the number of targets that he will get this season and he may even have to fight off rookies Tre Harris and KeAndre Lambert-Smith. And with the Chargers operating a run-heavy scheme, it makes sense why fantasy managers mostly passed on Johnston in their draft.

Start or sit in Week 1 standard/PPR leagues?

Sit. L.A. will most likely try to ease its way into the season by establishing its rushing attack on Friday, meaning pass-catching opportunities may be limited for receivers like Johnston. And with McConkey and Allen most likely getting a bulk of the attention from Justin Herbert, I don’t see Johnston contributing enough to make him a worthwhile addition to your starting lineup.
