Queen Camilla Wears Tartan and Shades of Blue in Aberdeen

Queen Camilla joined King Charles III for a visit to Aberdeen in the U.K. on Monday. The queen consort and reigning monarch visited the University of Aberdeen in Aberdeen, Scotland. Queen Camilla serves as the chancellor to the university, a role to which she was appointed in 2013.

For the occasion, Queen Camilla bundled up in warm attire featuring shades of blue. The queen consort wore a blue coat dress featuring a wool-type fabric. The coat dress included a slight hint of white, ruffled cuffs and added a touch of tartan pattern at the collar and cuffs as well.

The tartan patterning featured shades of green, dark blue, red and yellow. Along with the collar and cuffs, the tartan pattern was also seen on the buttons and lining of the pockets on Queen Camilla’s coat dress.

The queen consort accessorized with a blue scarf with botanical inspiration. She continued with other wintertime motifs, wearing black gloves and coordinated black boots, as well.

The tartan motif featured on Queen Camilla’s attire for Monday’s visit to Aberdeen harkened back to Kate Middleton’s attire during Christmas Day services last December. The Princess of Wales coordinated with her daughter, Princess Charlotte, for the special holiday. Both mother and daughter incorporated tartan patterns into their looks, with Middleton wearing a blue and green tartan pattern scarf that matched Princess Charlotte’s coat, which featured the same pattern.

Tartan patterning has deep roots in the Highlands. While often, and rightly, associated with Scotland, the tartan was and remains a pivotal piece of clothing for Highland clans and symbolizes clan kinship. It’s been a significant motif for royal attire for years.
