High-Protein White Hot Chocolate

When I crave hot chocolate, it’s usually white hot chocolate. One night, I created this simple, protein-packed white hot chocolate while trying to hit my protein goals. I whipped it up in the microwave on a whim, and it instantly became my go-to on cold nights. You can also simmer it on the stove. It feels indulgent while satisfying both my sweet tooth and protein goals in one cozy cup! For more festive drinks, try my Frozen Hot Chocolate, Pumpkin Spice Latte, and Pomegranate Martini.

Why You’ll Love This High-Protein Snack

Gina @ Skinnytaste.com

Call me weird, but I prefer white hot chocolate to traditional hot cocoa. When I don’t want caffeine but want something hot and sweet, I love Starbucks’ white chocolate hot cocoa. So, I loved this homemade white hot chocolate with a premade vanilla protein shake (don’t use powdered here–it won’t be good)!

  • High Protein: A great high protein snack if you’re craving something warm and sweet. Over 15 grams of protein per cup!
  • Easy: I’ve included microwave and stovetop instructions below–both ways only take a few minutes.
  • 3 ingredients: All you need is a vanilla protein shake, white chocolate chips, and cinnamon.
  • Dietary Restrictions: Weight Watchers-friendly, vegetarian, vegan (if using vegan protein shake and chocolate chips), gluten-free, high-protein.

White Hot Chocolate Ingredients

This simple white hot chocolate recipe only requires 3 ingredients for a warm, cozy treat. See the recipe card for the exact measurements.

  • Vanilla Protein Shake: The flavor of this drink will depend on the vanilla protein shake you choose, so pick one you love. I don’t recommend using powdered protein, as it tends to be too gritty and won’t blend well. I’ve tested several liquid protein shakes and found that Fairlife Nutrition Plan Vanilla and Orgain Clean Protein Shake in Vanilla Bean work best.
  • White Chocolate Chips: I use Lily’s sugar-free white chocolate chips to reduce the carbs, but any brand will work, including chopping a white chocolate bar.
  • Spices: Add a warm spice, like cinnamon or nutmeg, on top.
  • Optional Toppings: Make it festive by topping your mug with white chocolate chips, white chocolate shavings, mini marshmallows, whipped cream, or crushed candy canes.

How to Make White Hot Chocolate

I’ve included microwave and stovetop instructions. Scroll to the bottom for the printable instructions.

  • To make it on the stove, simmer the vanilla shake on medium-low until warm. Reduce the heat to low, and stir in the white chocolate chips until melted.
  • To make it in the microwave, pour the shake and chips into a mug and microwave until warm and the chocolate is melted.
  • To serve, top with whipped cream if desired and sprinkle with nutmeg or cinnamon.

Storage

I only make as much as I’m going to drink at one time since it’s so easy to make. However, if you have leftovers, refrigerate it for 2 days and reheat it in the microwave.
