Few sneakers have had a run quite like Adidas Sambas. First introduced in 1949 and adopted by soccer players, the kicks were crowned the Shoe of the Year at the 37th annual FN Achievement Awards in 2023. And while the silhouette may ebb and flow in popularity, Paul Mescal is proving the look still has legs in 2026.
On Friday, the actor attended a screening for his latest film, “Hamnet,” at The London West Hollywood, clad in a pair of black Adidas Sambas. Typically retailing for $100, the fan-favorite shoes are defined by a low-profile silhouette, as well as a grain leather upper with suede and gold foil details. Meanwhile, the shoes are also recognized by their signature gum sole, which is naturally tackier than standard rubber and can grip better on slick flooring. Though Mescal opted for the classic — and perhaps most sought-after — black style (which he’s worn on numerous occasions in the past), the Sambas come in a medley of colors, from emerald green to dusty pink.

The “Normal People” star wore the famous sneakers with a laid-back look consisting of a black long-sleeve polo shirt over a white tee, finished with relaxed light-wash jeans. As part of the event, Mescal, who portrays William Shakespeare in the film (which was adapted from Maggie O’Farrell’s 2020 novel), chatted with Antonia Blyth, a British writer based in Los Angeles. “Hamnet” also stars Jessie Buckley, Joe Alwyn and Noah Jupe.

Mescal is far from the only celebrity to co-sign the Adidas Samba sneakers. Justin Bieber wore a black pair in October for one of The League’s soccer games, proving the silhouette’s functionality. Olivia Rodrigo, meanwhile, is known to feature the kicks in her street style ensembles. Other fans of the style include Bella Hadid, Katie Holmes and Hailey Bieber — to name just a few.
