New Next-Generation Battery Technology Doubles Drone Flight Time – sUAS News

A breakthrough in battery technology has the potential to revolutionize the drone industry, enabling drones to fly twice as long or more.

Developed by BEI, this new battery technology boasts an unprecedented energy density of 410 Wh/kg, allowing drones to achieve significantly extended flight times and cover 70% longer distances.

Unlike conventional lithium-ion batteries that struggle to perform in extreme temperatures, BEI’s innovation excels in challenging environments. In rigorous independent testing conducted throughout Q2-Q4 2024, the battery powered a drone for 40 minutes at -20°C, while a standard lithium-ion battery lasted a mere 10 seconds under the same conditions.

“This is a game-changer for the drone industry,” says Jaehee Sweeney, CBDO at BEI. “Our battery technology not only extends flight time significantly but also unlocks operational capabilities in extreme climates that were previously impossible. This opens up a world of possibilities for applications in defense, surveillance, delivery, and more.”

The superior energy density of BEI’s battery translates to more than just longer flights. It allows drones to carry heavier payloads, increasing their versatility for tasks such as aerial photography, mapping, and inspection. Furthermore, the battery’s exceptional lifespan and rapid recharging capabilities contribute to increased efficiency and reduced downtime.

BEI’s commitment to innovation and performance is evident in this groundbreaking technology.

With its South Korean origins, the company also offers a reliable and secure supply chain, addressing growing concerns about geopolitical risks associated with battery production concentrated in other regions.
