MLB playoff picture: What does Twins-Phillies mean for NL playoffs?

The 2025 Major League Baseball season begins its final weekend of play today.

On the National League side of things two teams — the Cincinnati Reds and the New York Mets — are battling for the final Wild Card spot. But the top spot in the NL is still up for grabs, with both the Philadelphia Phillies and the Milwaukee Brewers in contention for home-field advantage.

Here is what is at stake when the Minnesota Twins visit Citizens Bank Park this evening.

The Minnesota Twins, with a 69-91 record, have already been eliminated from the playoffs.

The Phillies have already clinched both the NL East and a first-round bye in the playoffs. With their 95-65 record, the Los Angeles Dodgers (91-69) cannot catch them in the standings.

However, the Phillies remain in the mix for the top seed in the National League. They are one game behind the Milwaukee Brewers in that chase, but the Brewers hold the tiebreaker advantage.

That means that either a Phillies’ loss or a Milwaukee win over the Cincinnati Reds clinches the No. 1 seed for the Brewers and locks the Phillies in as the No. 2 seed in the National League.

If the Phillies win tonight and the Brewers lose, the fight for the top seed goes to the final day of the regular season.
