Miss Piggy Gets Her Own Movie — ‘I Am the Trend,’ She Declared to WWD

A self-proclaimed “fashion icon” and “legendary diva,” Miss Piggy is finally getting the Hollywood treatment that she deserves.

Jennifer Lawrence announced on Tuesday that she is working on a movie about the character. Emma Stone is attached to the project as a producer, while Broadway star Cole Escola is writing the script. “I don’t know if I can announce this, but I’m just going to,” Lawrence said during an interview with Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers on their “Las Culturistas” podcast.

Miss Piggy, who was originally called Pigathia Lee, first appeared on the “Herb Alpert” and the TJB TV special on Oct. 13, 1974, and later became a powerhouse star in “The Muppet Show.” Over the decades, she became known for her over-the-top looks and flamboyant style, eventually becoming a guest on fashion shows and red carpets, and even starring in fashion campaigns.

In 2015, WWD published an interview with Stephen Rotondaro, lead costumer for ABC’s “The Muppets,” who shared an insight into Miss Piggy’s fashion sense.

“When it comes to fashion, I believe in pleasing yourself first. If you’re happy with how you look, don’t worry about pleasing others — it’s not as if their opinion actually matters!” Miss Piggy said. “Also, I believe that what you wear should say something about you. My clothes always make a statement, and that statement is usually: ‘Hey, look at me, I’m wearing something original, expensive…and I got the network to pay for it!’”

In the interview, the charismatic diva described her style as “enchanting, enthralling, entrancing. And when I’m out on a date: sassy, saucy and seductive.”

Donna Karan, Vivienne Westwood, Zac Posen, Marc Jacobs, Jeremy Scott, Christian Louboutin, Brian Atwood, Coco Chanel, Jeanne Lanvin, Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Dior were among the designers Miss Piggy named as her collaborators. “If you are a famous designer and I didn’t mention you this time, please send over some couture and I’ll make sure you get a plug in my next interview,” she said.

The character also looked back on her style evolution over the decades. “I have become far more discriminating about what I wear. There was a time when I wafted in the winds of every fashion trend. As for most of us, this resulted in some extremely unfortunate run-ins with spandex, bejeweled headbands and can’t-get-through-the-doorway shoulder pads. However, I’m now my own fashionista. I don’t follow trends. I am the trend,” she said.

“The Muppet Show” will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2026, and a TV special is also scheduled to air on ABC. While the Miss Piggy-themed movie is still in the works, WWD looks back at her fashion moments over the years. See photos in the gallery below.
