Macklemore has issued a statement after facing backlash for saying âfuck Americaâ at the benefit festival Palestine Will Live Forever. Writing on social media, he called the comment a âslip upâ but pledged his âunwaveringâ support for Palestine, adding that Americans should ârise and recognize our collective power rather than succumb to our own apathy.â The event, he said, was ârooted in peace, love, and solidarityâ and should not have been âovershadowed by two words.â
On September 24, Macklemore was dropped from the inaugural Neon City Festival, less than a week after being announced as a headliner. The festival cited âunforeseen circumstances,â though two Seattle sports franchises with whom he is affiliated had already distanced themselves from his âincreasingly divisive comments,â as they said in a joint statement. A member of the Seattle Marinersâ front office added, âWe are aware of the incident and agree with the other teams in town: Sports and music should connect, not divide us.â
In his statement, Macklemore went on, in part:
Palestine Will Live Forever benefitted several aid organizations: Pious Projects, HEAL Palestine, United Nations Relief and Works Agency, and the Palestine Childrenâs Relief Fund. Macklemoreâs appearance followed his pro-Palestine songs âHindâs Hallâ and âHindâs Hall 2,â the latter of which features Palestinian American artists Anees and Amer Zahr, the Gaza-born rapper MC Abdul, and a Los Angeles Palestinian youth choir.
