Low-iridium device speeds progress towards green hydrogen

Producing ‘green’ hydrogen by splitting water molecules is key to curbing industrial carbon emissions. But the technology is still too expensive to compete with cheap — but dirty — extraction of hydrogen from natural gas. That’s in part because the devices, called electrolysers, that split water require catalysts made of rare elements such as iridium.
