Lolina: “gg” Track Review | Pitchfork

It wasn’t long ago that Lolina was a lone, menacing magpie circling the perimeter of the experimental pop world. These days you don’t have to look far to find artists channeling disaffected swag through broken laptop loops and chintzy keyboard presets, but “gg” is a reminder of who set the template. With one smoggy sample, Lolina lays her mistakes bare: “Come, meet me at the bar/Same time, same place,” she invites her friend, a devilish lilt in her voice. “We can talk about our failures, and look good doing it.” She sounds almost proud of the backs she’s stabbed to get to where she is, even if the rasp in her voice betrays a lingering emptiness.

But no time for regret, there’s bad decisions to make. Up to the rooftops to gossip more, Lolina and her confidant talking shit like they know their best days are behind them. “Run the credits, roll the dice/I’ve given some bad advice,” she hums wearily, barely beginning to draw out a melody before collapsing again into composed cattiness. And so it goes, back and forth, each new reckoning evaporating as quickly as the last round of drinks. Lolina’s earned the type of confidence that only comes with time, when it’s far too late to fix what you’ve done.
