Lisa, the Thai superstar known as one of the members of Blackpink and for her work in “The White Lotus,” performed solo on the first night of Coachella. This year, the singer brought futuristic and otherworldly inspirations to the stage with the help of her stylist Brett Alan Nelson and designer Asher Levine.
Levine, known for working with lab-grown leathers and creating high-tech outfits, was invited by Lisa and Nelson to create two different looks for her performance: the first, worn during her opening act, evoked anime villains, while bioluminescent organisms and translucent insects inspired the second.

“For the villain, the references were anime cyborgs — full muscle suits and oversize jackets. I added my spin by fusing that idea with a reptilian, anatomical aesthetic,” Levine told WWD via email. “We built a sculpted reptile skin suit and breastplate completely custom for her. It was amazing to see Lisa embrace the direction I pitched — it pushed the character further into this evolved, powerful alien creature.”

The second look featured a glowing tendril suit with glass-like petals and an undersuit that maps colorful, vein-like lines along the body. “Both looks explore transformation — one cold-blooded and commanding, the other ethereal and light. That balance is what excites me,” Levine said.

To create both outfits, Levine worked “at lightning speed” in his atelier in Los Angeles with his fashion, sculpture and tech teams. “That’s how we’re able to produce such intricate, high-tech pieces so quickly. And yes, also embedded wireless illumination. That’s been a language of mine for years. I see it as a kind of wearable alchemy — transforming light, texture and form into something alive,” he said.

Levine’s work is rooted in biomorphism, anatomy and power. “I design for those evolving into their next self — into something alien, something other,” he said. While collaborating with Lisa, he focused on creating something that could resist stage lights, heat and choreography. “My work lives in that intersection: couture and tech and movement. It’s about making new age exotics not just visual, but wearable. Everything has to read as magic, but also move like second skin. Lisa needed to feel powerful, fluid and completely herself inside these alien forms — and that’s exactly what we gave her.”

Lisa performed Friday at Coachella on the Sahara Stage. She will return to the same stage on April 18 at 7:45 p.m. PST. This marks her second solo appearance at Coachella, following her group’s headline performance in 2023.
