LIFT Drone Development in Puerto Rico

Empowering Local Engineering Students and Advancing National Security

LIFT, a national advanced manufacturing innovation institute supported by the Department of Defense, has announced a new drone development initiative at its facility in Caguas, Puerto Rico. This program aims to empower engineering students and drive innovation in drone technology, with a focus on real-world applications that support both economic growth and national security.

Hands-On Learning for Future Engineers

Students from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez, College of Mechanical Engineering, are at the heart of this initiative. They are designing, building, and testing a lightweight drone attachment for customized environmental monitoring. The project highlights Puerto Rico’s growing role as a center for advanced manufacturing and next-generation aerospace systems.

Dr. Robert Shaner, Chief Education and Workforce Development Officer at LIFT, emphasized the importance of this work. “This effort underscores LIFT’s commitment to strengthening the U.S. manufacturing and defense innovation base by investing in regional talent, driving innovative technologies, and fostering collaboration between academia, industry, and government,” he said. “Puerto Rico is uniquely positioned to serve as a national testbed for drone technologies and advanced materials that support both economic resilience and national security.”

Advancing Technology and Workforce Skills

The initiative is funded by the Department of Defense Manufacturing Technology Program and is managed by the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering. LIFT is working in partnership with the Puerto Rico Drone Academy to deliver the program. Students participate in every stage of the design-build-test process, using Arduino microcontrollers and 3D printing tools. They also take part in technical workshops and both bench and flight testing.

The drones and attachments developed by students are intended for mission-critical uses such as port security, supply chain visibility, and air quality monitoring. This hands-on experience prepares students for future careers in engineering and technology.

Building a Stronger Innovation Ecosystem

LIFT’s program is part of a broader vision to create a resilient regional supply chain for innovation. The goal is not only to prepare the next generation of the workforce but also to deliver practical solutions for national challenges. The organization operates as a public-private partnership between the Department of Defense, industry, and academia, focusing on advanced manufacturing technologies and workforce development.
