Kris Bryant, star third baseman for the Colorado Rockies, recently had his Lamborghini Huracan stolen as it was being shipped to his home in Las Vegas. Luckily, police retrieved the supercar and the story behind how it was stolen is wild.

Bryant, who spends his off seasons in Las Vegas, wanted his 2023 Lamborghini Huracan shipped to Vegas while he was there, Carscoops reports. He hired a shipping company to bring the car to the city. Unfortunately the car never arrived and it was reported missing to police in Cherry Hills Village, Colorado on October 2. It seems the shipping company got duped by an email that invited in hackers.

Investigators eventually discovered that the transport company fell victim to a “business email compromise,” which they described as a “sophisticated scheme allowing suspects to arrange unauthorized transport of vehicles nationwide.” This reportedly enabled the bad actors to reroute the car to another destination in Las Vegas.

It looks like the hackers plan was not quite foolproof. Police used license plate recognition cameras to trace the transportation truck’s route. On October 7, authorities found the car and arrested several suspects.

It turned out to be a huge bust for police as additional information and other suspects were found including the “discovery of two additional stolen vehicles, multiple fraudulent VIN packages, fake registration documents, key fobs, and VIN-switching tools.”

Despite seeming as if police were scrambling specifically to find Bryant’s stolen Huracan, Cherry Hills Village Police Detective Justin Smith told Carscoops the whole operation was a win and they treat all stolen cars he same.

Me, and our chief, and our command staff all take auto theft very seriously and any time we can get back somebody’s vehicle that’s been stolen, that’s a win for us. We would treat it no differently if it was someone’s F-150 versus a Lamborghini.
