Jessica Pegula debuted the latest tennis collection from Adidas on Tuesday while playing at the U.S. Open in New York. She defeated fellow American player Shelby Rogers in the first round of the Grand Slam tournament.
Pegula’s blue and white Adidas outfit is inspired by New York’s hard courts, according the brand. Motion capture technology was used to “optimize movement and reduce distraction.”
“The technology, which uses digital image recording to test a moving target, measures the strain on an athlete’s body over time, revealing areas that generate the most heat during play,” reads a statement from Adidas.
Pegula selected the Pro Wow Dress, a colorblock design featuring a pleated skirt and breathable mesh panels. The sporty frock’s sleeve cutouts also serve a purpose.
“Following the natural curves of the body, they were purposefully placed in high-movement areas — such as the shoulders and under the arm — to help maximize players’ range of motion,” Adidas’ press release continues.
Pegula, who is ranked as number six in the world by the Women’s Tennis Association, is currently sponsored by the sportswear label.
“Home tournaments are always my favorite — the crowd’s support and atmosphere is unmatched,” she told Adidas. “But the East Coast heat in summer is tough to compete in, so being able to move freely is crucial. In those pivotal moments, it’s important to keep your cool so you can focus on your game and perform at your best.”
