Does Jean Paul Gaultier have its eye on Duran Lantink?
The Paris fashion house — which has been hosting guest couturiers in recent years, and is said to be searching for a creative director of fashion — has held discussions with the up-and-coming Dutch designer, according to market sources.
The likelihood of a deal could not immediately be learned.
Lantink could not immediately be reached for comment. Contacted on Thursday, Jean Paul Gaultier representatives declined all comment.
French designer Ludovic de Saint Sernin was the latest outside fashion talent invited to create a one-off couture collection for Jean Paul Gaultier, shown in a runway format on Wednesday evening during Paris Couture Week.
It is understood the Gaultier house also has been searching for a successor to Florence Tétier, who quietly stepped down as its creative director of fashion last September.
Lantink, who has made circularity a keystone of his design process, was the winner of the Karl Lagerfeld Special Jury Prize in last year’s LVMH Prize competition.
He is known for his cut-and-paste approach, puffed-up silhouettes, and a subversive sense of humor.
In recent years, Lantink created custom pieces for the likes of Billie Eilish and Janelle Monáe — including the latter’s vagina pants from her “Pynk” music video that went viral on social media in 2018.
Lantink is also among eight emerging brands that have been named finalists of the 2025 International Woolmark Prize.
De Saint Sernin was the eighth guest couturier at Gaultier after Nicolas Di Felice, Simone Rocha, Rabanne’s Julien Dossena, Haider Ackermann, Olivier Rousteing of Balmain, Diesel’s Glenn Martens and Sacai’s Chitose Abe.
Following his retirement from the runway in 2020, Gaultier came up with the idea of the couture house inviting different designers to interpret his vast and eclectic oeuvre, achieved over a career spanning 50 years.
The house has also been developing ready-to-wear capsules, which it sells primarily online.
