How expert skateboarders use physics on the half-pipe

Skateboarders gain extra speed by squatting and then standing up at the right time as they go up and down the curving walls of the ramps called half-pipes. Physicists have now calculated how a skater can optimize this ‘pumping’ motion to move as fast as possible¹.
