At the time of publication, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) hasn’t announced the recall, so this is unique in that a retailer is alerting customers first. CVS has offered a refund to customers who purchased the milk. (FYI: In September, Horizon Organic Dairy, LLC, voluntarily recalled its heavy whipping cream due to potential premature spoilage.)
What should you do if you have Horizon Organic Whole Milk?
The latest recall advises that anyone who purchased Horizon’s 8-ounce cartons of organic whole milk should stop drinking it immediately and return the cartons to CVS for a refund. Check the back label of your milk carton for these numbers:

Although unopened pasteurized milk can be refrigerated for seven days (and frozen for about three months), according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), “best by” and “use by” dates indicate when the product is best for flavor or quality—not for safety. You can tell if your milk is spoiled by looking for the following:
- Off-putting odor
- Sour taste or flavor
- Contains chunks or lumpy texture
In the case of this recall, you shouldn’t use the milk regardless of whether it appears spoiled or not.
