Have a Sweet Weekend. | Cup of Jo

What are you up to this weekend? Toby and I went to the Liberty basketball game last night, and the stadium was absolutely electric! Can’t wait to see more WNBA games. Hope you have a good one, and here are a few fun links from around the web…

Whoa, this psychological test about success blew my mind.

After our watch post, a few people requested ideas for watches under $50, so here are five: chain, ’80s, green, brown, rose, and especially this silver Casio, which feels deeply cool.

A Northern Michigan road trip, be still my heart. And don’t forget the sand dunes! (NYT gift link)

My sister wore cherry earrings to dinner a few weeks ago, how cute are they?

40 favorite interview questions, including “What’s the difference between someone who’s great in your role versus someone who’s outstanding?” and “How did you prepare for this interview?” and “Among the people you’ve worked with, who do you admire and why?”

After watching Tina Fey’s The Four Seasons, I’m curious to watch the Alan Alda movie that inspired it.

Ooh, I wish I could vote for Annie Andrews, MD, for South Carolina senator. Her campaign video is funny and razor sharp.

The cool way to style a button-up shirt, according to Somsack Sikhounmuong. (Big Salad, loved his issue)

Love this family photo.

Great summer tee.

How to stay at a friend’s house without apologizing the whole time, haha.

Plus, four reader comments:

Says Colleen on what’s a kind thing someone’s done for you: “After my daughter died, a package appeared in the mail. It was Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life, along with a note from my friend, saying: ‘When I heard about the birth of your daughter, I played Isn’t She Lovely and danced. Now every time it comes on, I think of her sweet spirit and dance. I thought maybe you guys might want to do it, too.’ She gave me something joyful to do with my grief that felt more like a celebration of her life. Now my son and I put it on to have dance parties, a ritual that keeps her alive in our family. What a gift.”

Says Ellen on what’s a kind thing someone’s done for you: “I was at a natural history museum with my not-yet-diagnosed autistic three-year-old. In the throws of potty training, he CLEARLY needed to use the potty, but was having an absolute meltdown. As I talked him through the experience (clearly and very loudly), and he cried, I was feeling like such a bad mother. As we got out of the bathroom stall and were washing hands, a very sweet college student said, ‘I wish my mom would have talked to me like that when things were hard.’ It made me feel seen and like my son was seen and that maybe a hard moment was actually a success.”

Says Robin on what’s a kind thing someone’s done for you: “When I was a teenager, my mom was struggling with alcohol addiction, and I was sent to live with my dad. I often scheduled lunches with her, and more often than not, she would cancel. Once, I was waiting for her at a French restaurant (before the days of cell phones) when the hostess approached and said, ‘Are you Robin? I’m so sorry, honey. Your mom just called, and she’s not coming.’ I burst into tears, and the woman immediately offered to buy my lunch. I thanked her but said no. Instead, I ordered a meal and sat by myself. Just before I left, she came up to my table, laid a hand on my shoulder, and gently put down a box of baked treats from their bakery. I still tear up when I think of that incredibly kind gesture from a stranger. (And on a wonderful side note, my mom is about to hit her 10-year anniversary of getting sober!)”

Says Anna K on what’s a kind thing someone’s done for you: “The day after I came home from the hospital with my firstborn, I was home alone, nursing, stuck in my chair, unable to stand up because the C-section scar hurt so much, and looking around at the absolute catastrophe that was my living room. Right when I thought, ‘This is it, this is the rest of my life now,’ my neighbor dropped by a cheese toastie and fruit salad, and I’m moved to tears 11 years later just thinking about it.”
