SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — One of the most famous golf scenes ever got a classic re-enactment on Saturday morning at the WM Phoenix Open.
Actor Christopher McDonald, who not only played in Wednesday’s Pro-Am at TPC Scottsdale but also depicted Shooter McGavin in Happy Gilmore, decided to have some fun with fans on Saturday morning. While sprinting away from the incoming crowd, Gilmore tried to put on a Gold Jacket, evoking one of the closing scenes from the 1996 classic. In the original film, Happy Gilmore holed a ridiculous shot at the end and won the tournament, and thus the Gold Jacket, but McGavin was so incensed by Gilmore that he stole his prize and ran away with it.
Social media had a field day with the re-creation on Saturday.
But three days before, on Wednesday, McDonald had even more fun. He crashed Justin Thomas’ press conference midway through and shared some details about Happy Gilmore 2, which Netflix will release sometime in the summer of 2025.
“I can’t really talk too much about it because it’s under wraps, but it’s going to be awesome. So much fun to shoot with new faces. Travis Kelce was in it. But that said, it’s got the quintessential Adam Sandler touch. He’s back; of course, Julie Bowen is back; yours truly, Chris McDonald and a lot of new faces,” McDonald said Wednesday.
“But it’s got so much heart and so much humor that it’s going to — I think new generations are going to eat it up because it’s a rare and beautiful thing, and Netflix went above and beyond at making it the best. It’s going to be very surprisingly funny.”
The press conference then showed a brief video about Happy Gilmore 2, which fans can see in Season 3 of Full Swing. The third season is set to hit Netflix on Feb. 25.
